World Series Updates | |
---|---|
08/14/2018 | Tuesday wrapped up the World Series for Hit Squad. A few families left early to head back to San Antonio and fly home. The players and families that remained, joined our Host and Amassador, Jaime, for lunch at Parrilla de San Miguel for a delicious and entertaining lunch.
The team said their goodbyes and headed in all different directions (that direction was San Antonio). The 2018 season for Hit Squad was a great one. The team played 63 games (39-22-2) over a six month stretch. |
08/13/2018 | Hit Squad faced a must win game in game 4 for any chance to stay alive. The team gave up a couple early runs in the first inning and then got them right back in the bottom of the first on three walks, a few wild pitches, and an RBI ground out by Tyler Howard. Tanner Beaman settled into a nice groove on the mound, but New England kept adding here and there and it was too much to overcome.
Hit Squad was in a tough pool, where the 3 teams ahead of them ended up in the final 4 of the World Series. The team had a great time in Eagle Pass. While they didn't advance to the elimination round, they played hard all throughout the tournament, met lots of kids on the other teams, and enjoyed all of their teammates. Player of the Game: Tanner Beaman [Introductions] [Game 4 box score] [Game 4 scorecard] [Game 4 Columbian] |
08/12/2018 | In game 3, Hit Squad faced a tough Texas team that had 3 losses in the tournament but were determined to get a win before they went home. Each team blanked each other early. Tyler Howard was throwing heat for the Hit Squad team. In the third inning, Hit Squad had a few errors which allowed Texas to get 3 runs. However, Howard came back and threw three more shutout innings. In the 7th inning, Casey Struckmeier came in to close when Tyler hit the pitch count limit. Casey gave up a quick single but then induced a fielder's choice ground ball where SS Seth Minor threw to Max Mitchell at third base to get the lead runner. The next batter flew out to center, and Tanner Beaman made a great play on a sharp hit ball to first base to end the game.
Hit Squad now controls their destiny going into the fourth and final game of pool play. If Hit Squad beats New England on Monday, they will advance to the single elimination round and would play on Tuesday. Player of the Game: Seth Minor [Postgame] [Game 3 box score] [Game 3 scorecard] [Game 3 Columbian] |
08/11/2018 | Hit Squad pushed a very good New Jersey team hard but finally fell, losing 10-3. Hit Squad put up 3 runs early and frustrated the first of Atlantic Shore's aces. Tyler Davis blanked the winners of the Middle Atlantic region with pinpoint accuracy and a nasty curveball. New Jersey scrapped together a few runs to tie the game. But by the fifth inning, Davis tired, and was replaced. After that Hit Squad was not able to contain the potent hitters. The second of Jersey's two aces, 6' 2" Tommy Finnegan, came in to relieve and was hitting 80+ on the radar gun. He also mixed in an impressive curveball that kept the hitters off balance. HS was unable to generate anything against him.
Hit Squad now has it's back against the wall. The pool is filled with very good teams and HS will need to win both of their next games to have a chance of advancing. Player of the Game: Tyler Davis [Game 2 box score] [Game 2 scorecard] [Game 2 Columbian] |
08/10/2018 | The games finally began for Hit Squad. The Tallahassee team is a very good team that made it to the final four in last year's World Series. Even though the Florida team scored first, Hit Squad rallied back and scored and then tied it up in the second inning. But a few errors on the field took the wind out of the sails and Hit Squad wasn't able to recover. Eventually the team lost 16-6 (6 innings).
One neat thing about the World Series. Each team was supplied with a local kid to be the uniformed bat boy. Our guy, was a great little ball player named Mike. The players loved him and he seemed to like hanging out with Hit Squad as well. During one of the pregames, he did warmups with the team. Hit Squad was scheduled to play all their games at 2:30pm, but luckily Babe Ruth decided to move up the games 2 hours earlier, so our games will start at 12:30pm from now on. Hopefully this helps a little with the heat. Player of the Game: Max Mitchell [Game 1 box score] [Game 1 scorecard] [Game 1 Columbian] |
08/9/2018 | On Thursday, the city of Eagle Pass had a World Series parade through town that ended at the fields. The team traveled in the back of two pickup trucks, the first driven by the Chief of Police. [truck 1], [truck 2].
After arriving at Moncada Field they had Opening Ceremonies. [Team] [Waiting to enter] [On the field] [All the teams] The team had a practice after Opening Ceremonies were over. After a swim at the hotel, some of the team and parents went into Piedras Negras, Mexico, with our fantastic Host and Ambassador, Jaime. We visited the Museo de la Frontera Norte, and a few other historical locations. After that the team had an amazing dinner at Barrokas Restaurante Bar. [Team headed into Mexico] [The team on our way out, with our host, Jaime] |
08/8/2018 | Wednesday had an early coaches meeting and then the team headed to the World Series Skills Competition. It was a great time to meet some of the other teams. There were four competitions. Max, Tim and Alden participated in the Fastest Feet competition. Most of the team participated in the Around The Horn challenge. Hit Squad WON this competition. They were fast and were the only team that made no errors. Dom(P), Marcus(C), Cyi(3B), Tim(LF), Casey(SS), Alden(CF), Tanner(2B), TylerD(RF), and Nate(1B) were the participants. Casey and TylerD were the throwers for the Golden Arm competition. TylerH was Hit Squad's representative in the Home Run contest. The team attended the World Series banquet on Wednesday night. |
08/7/2018 | Team arrived in San Antonio after flying the red eye from PDX. After a great breakfast in San Antonio at Tommy's for some breakfast tacos, the team headed to Eagle Pass. The team immediately went to the Eagle Pass Convention Center to get checked in and get some of the tourney details. After some swimming, the team headed to dinner together and then went to the Eagle Pass Street party. A local businessman, Jaime, is our team's Host. We met him at the party and he gave us a tour of the store he owns. |
